Alabaster Crafts

The craft of producing alabaster is a tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation by skilled craftsmen in the archaeological area of Qurna, west of Luxor. The art of sculpture is an ancient profession, and at first glance it cannot be distinguished from its ancient Egyptian counterpart.
Alabaster is manufactured nowhere else in Egypt than in the Qurna region, west of Luxor, where the city is home to more than 250 factories dedicated to creating the exquisite carved masterpieces. These intricate pieces echo and pay homage to ancient ruins, and have been meticulously crafted from the same alabaster stone that the ancient pharaohs revered and crafted.

Locations

Alabaster stone is usually found in nature in sedimentary rock deposits, as large quantities of it have been discovered in several regions around the world, most notably Tuscany, Italy, England, the United Kingdom, and of course our beloved Egypt.
